Pairing a new apple watch to my phone

Hi, I had just recently purchased the series 3 apple watch. I am trying to pair it with my phone. After pairing the watch, a screen directs me to update the watch, when doing so, a message pops up saying it it unable to find an update because I have no internet connection when I am connected to the Wifi and have good cellular service. I have restarted my phone and the apple watch multiple times and the same screen shows.
