Un-sync my mac without deleting photos

I have macOS High Sierra. How do I "un-sync" my macbook pro from my icloud/apple ID? I don't want all my iphone photos connected to icloud to also be stored on my mac- it takes up too much space even when the photos/videos are optimized. Thanks!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

On your macbook, open the Photos app, then choose Photos > Preferences, then click iCloud, then deselect iCloud Photos.

After you turn off iCloud Photo Library, the Photos app on your macbook can’t access your photos or videos stored in iCloud. Any edits you make to photos on your macbook won’t appear on your other devices, and any new photos you take will not be added to Photos on your macbook. Your library remains in iCloud and available to other devices that use iCloud Photo Library.
