AV adapter and Apple TV app

Has anyone gotten the HDMI adapter to work with the Apple TV app? I see questions from last year that it doesn’t work and I just spent most of the day with Support and couldn’t resolve my issues. I bought the adapter specifically for Apple TV because my smart tv doesn’t have an app and doesn’t support airplay. I even called Support before I bought it and they said it would work. Frustrating that no one at Apple Support will admit that the adapter works with every other streaming service but their own.
