Method to reset Mac OS X admin account password when password isn't known

What methods can be used to reset a Mac OS X admin account password when the passwords for all of the admin accounts on the Mac aren't known?

We are able to logon to the Mac with standard accounts but don't know the passwords for any of the admin accounts.

We don't want to delete or reset the Mac since we need to preserve the data and accounts that are currently on this Mac.

What methods can be used to reset the password for the Mac admin account or to create a new admin account with a password that we know?
