this Only occur in whatsapp. It happened a while ago but I only just noticed that the screen only goes dark when the camera is covered or my finger passes over the camera.
is there any security concern that I should be wary of?

If this only happens in WhatsApp, we'd recommend deleting and then downloading the app from the App Store. You can see info related to backing up WhatsApp below.
After reinstalling, if the problem persists, we'd recommend reaching out to WhatsApp directly for additional assistance.

It was the front camera.
When I cover the top notch with my finger or if I hover over it, the screen goes blank while texting or reading text or when the rear camera is activated.

We'd like to make sure we're on the same page. You notice in WhatsApp that the display will go dark when covering the camera on the back of your iPhone? If so, does it do this while using the camera in WhatsApp or when in a text thread as well?
Also, we'd recommend checking to see if WhatsApp has any available updates and install them if need be.
