Headphone problems with iPhone 4

Hello all, I just picked up the iPhone 4 and whenever I plug in a pair of headphones or ear buds the sound tends to play as if only half the sound is coming through the headphones. This problem is remedied by jiggling the plug but once I move the phone problem comes back and I have to jiggle the plug again to get it working again.

Oddly enough this seems to only happen with "vertical" plugs, I used an "L" shaped plug did not have this problem nor do I have this problem when using Apple's own ear buds.

I know that the earlier iPhones had recessed headphone jacks so special adapters had to be purchased is this also the case with the iPhone 4?

Hello, I had this problem. New iPhone 4, got it all set how I wanted which took some time, went to listen to some music and it was like the vocals were really faint and echoey the supporting music was much more prominent - almost like a karaoke mix. After reading all of the comments on your problem and having come across the description of the iPhone 4's 4 jack plug, it clicked that I needed to push the plug in one jack further. Ooops! I had tried this before but the last notch has quite a lot of give to it before it goes right in and being a new precious toy, you really don't want to force anything that isn't supposed to be forced. I know certainly that with one of my previous iPhones - I think it was the first model - it was a 3 jack, but I had a pair of headphones that worked on it but was a 4 jack so it would sit 1 notch up in the socket. This is why I was more sure it was a technical problem with the phone and was dreading having to get it replaced and have to get everything back on the new one how I like it again.

I am sure the apple genius knows what he's talking about when he said that not all earphones work on the i4, I'm sure they don't. But I knew this wasn't the problem as it was the earphones that came with the phone that weren't working for me. Therefore, I might be wrong, but if you're still having this problem and any small part of the jack is showing above the plugs "handle", give it an extra firm push in till there's not metal showing. As long as the plug clicks in 4 jacks (or notches), it won't hurt your phone - honest 🙂

Not sure why I did this but it fixed the clicking noise

Did the reset settings

Still had clicking sound

Made a call

Heard the clicking noise

Pressed and held the button on the in-line mic until the clicking stopped

No more clicking

I made a couple of calls and they worked as expected

BTW. I went to the "bar" last night and the tech there had no clue, just showed me that the apple buds worked and my skullcandy did not... Even did that on another phone. Not sure if the hold the button fix is an in-documented feature, but I'm happy they work now and sound great...

Unbelievable; I did try what michaeljamesbrown suggested - and it worked. Didn't expect it to to-be honest, but thought it less embarrasing to try rather than taking it to the Apple store for them to reset it in front of me.

Mine was basically outputting monophonic sound rather than stereophonic; I have a mono/stereo switch on my Pioneer HDJ-2000's - this made no difference. It seemed to start happening after I shoved my BlackBerry earphones/handsfree in to make a call. Anyway, give it a go.

Cheers Michael.
