I recently purchased a series 3 Watch from someone on FaceBook Marketplace and got scammed as the person did not remove the old Apple ID, and I would guess this watch wasn't theirs to sell. I accept the loss at this point, but wonder if there is a way for Apple to contact the owner via the Apple ID email on file, and let them know the watch has been found?
Activation Lock is an anti-theft feature that cannot be bypassed. Only the previous owner can remove the lock by using their Apple ID & password. Apple will not help you find the previous owner. If the previous owner cannot or will not remove the lock, then the watch is useless to you or anyone else. Try to get a refund (through FaceBook Marketplace) or dispose of the watch properly.
