Hi Manic1980,
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with your iPod Classic. We're happy to provide some information to assist.
We'd recommend attempting a force restart with the steps found here: Learn how to force restart your iPod
Specifically the section for the iPod Classic near the bottom, which states:
- Put the Hold switch firmly in the unlocked position.
- Press and hold the Menu and Centre (or Select) buttons for 8 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo.
Still need help?
- Set your iPod on a desk or table and try again. This time, when you press the Centre button, don't touch the Click Wheel. And when you press the Menu button, press it near the outside of the Click Wheel instead of near the centre.
If the issue continues, you can test a restore with the steps here: If your iPod won't turn on or seems frozen which leads to attempting disk mode if your iPod isn't seen or recognized by iTunes. You can find that information here: How to use disk mode on your iPod
Should the issue remain, it's possible there is a hardware issue. You can find details about the possibility for obtaining service for vintage products here: Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty
Best!
