iPadOS 15 Home Screen
I just updated to iPadOS 15 and cannot get my widgets to appear on the side of my Home Screen like they used to be. Is this layout gone??

There are many changes within iPadOS15 - of which one is the loss of the Today view on the first Home Screen.
Whilst you are now able to freely position widgets on any of the Home Screens, you have lost the “compact” first Home Screen layout (that shows a compressed 4x6 grid of App/Folder icons and Today view). Now, without the compressed view, Widgets individually occupy elements of the 4x6 icon grid - and will displace some App/Folder icons as necessary.
The net effect of adding Widgets to the Home Screen(s) results in reduced efficiency in using available screen space on Home Screens.

I liked how it was in iOS 14 better. In iOS 15 you can swipe right on the Home Screen and see the old widget vertical layout on one screen. So you could remove all widgets from the home screen to regain app icon space on that screen.
Yes,
That layout is GONE!
Widgets are dynamic now and can be placed anywhere you want on your iPad's Home screens.
You can put widgets whereever you please and you can have more than one instance of a widget on different Home screens.
You can arrange widgets anyway you wish and you have a few more widget sizes with more info to choose from.
iPadOS 15 ways of handling widgets is much more flexible, now.
And widgets are NOT locked the the 1st Home screen, any longer.
The new widgets feature is better.
I deleted all of them. And like I said, the today view is on my iPad if I right swipe from the first home page. I created. a new blank last home page and tried placing some widgets there. Ok, maybe some folks make use of this, but not me.
Thanks a lot for your reply. As you say, the loss of Today View has resulted in a total mess of my Home Screen where I basically had control of more or less everything I wanted. Widgets with news, weather and music on the left and enough space for all the apps I regularly use. You can’t do that any more! I decided to roll back to iOS 14 until Apple gives us the option to keep Today view pinned on the Home Screen. Keeping as many widgets as one wants on the left side of the Home Screen plus 30 apps in a more compact grid was really practical and aesthetically pleasing and one of the reasons I bought a new iPad.
I agree so much!! I can only fit two widgets on top of each other now and if I put them to the left it only allows 4 apps beside in each row, and the spacing is atrocious! Apple needs to fix this or at least give us the option back!

Yes that’s the thing. In iOS 14 adding widgets wouldn’t affect how many apps appeared on the Home Screen. I liked that layout a lot. You got all you wanted on one screen. 😕
I played with this a bit last night. Yikes, my app icons moved all over the place and I have no idea how the OS decided to place them where it did. Also, app spacing seems to expand when a widget is placed on a page. I think this new Widget setup could be OK, but it needs some work.
I left feedback as well. I enjoyed the Today View much better. I was able to recreate the look a bit, still a bit off. Oh well not everyone likes change. Doubt they will bring it back but worth a shot!
You can choose NOT to use any Widgets.
You do not have to use Widgets, at all.
I only use a few for weather and for easier access widgets that link back to the Settings app, so I do not have to keep always going back to the Settings app for always accessing regularly used items.
Between dynamic and flexible widgets and the App Library, it appears these do not seemed to be liked here, at all.
That and some users hate using the Multitasking featues, as well.
Also, it appears, so far, no way, any longer, to actually toggle OFF Multitasking in iPadOS 15, now.
I just deleted the widgets from who knows where. They were things I have never used. (weather?—I put my trust in NOAA). I never used the today screen before and don’t plan to start. Safari and mail changes are making me think it’s time to explore alternatives to apple.
Ahh, thanks for the multitasking info - have no use for that either, so since you cannot turn it off, I'll stick with iOS 14 for now. On my older ipad Pro, I only use the European TV apps to watch movies, read a book, or browse here occasionally and one game. On the newer one, much the same; in general, I prefer using my iMac for anything to do with "work", rather than "play".
