My Apple ID email is no longer a working platform (verizon email obsolete) how can I update my email without starting over with a new account? Please help

If my original email is obsolete and no longer a working platform- how do I update me Apple ID email to receive emails etc? I dont want to and shouldn’t have to start all over just to have a valid email linked to the account….right? I mean its 2021….it seems reasonable to expect the option to update or add an additional email without creating a new account from scratch. When I tried adding it under General it wouldn’t accept it. SOS
