Where has answer with headphones gone on watchOS 8 and iOS 15?

Before I updated yesterday, when a call came in my iPhone 12, while I was wearing my Apple Watch (S6) and while I was wearing my AirPods ... the call answer button showed a green AirPods icon and the call answered on my AirPods.

Now if I'm listening to music on my AirPods on my phone and a call comes in, the Apple Watch showes an answer button without the AirPods and when I press answer the voice comes out of my watch and then music starts playing again in my headphones while someone is talking out of my watch.

How do I enable the answer via AirPods button on my watch again?

Apple Watch Series 6, watchOS 8

AirPods by design connected to Watch at the same time as they connected to iPhone. That's why you can answer calls from watch and sound go to the AirPods, which connected to iPhone.

But starting from watchOS 7.6 if in the AirPods settings turned on automatic switching they won't get anything from watch. It's a bug, and Apple should fix that, but since there little to none users complaining — only thing you can do for now is turning off automatic switching in the AirPods settings, as I mentioned in the previous post.

@TopoRUS I'm not sure that's quite the issue I'm having, I have never connected my AirPods to my watch, only ever my phone. It's just my watch has stopped showing the green airpods icon on it when a call comes in. I have never ever directly connected AirPods to the watch though, it's always just appeared I assume via my phone. I can't find the setting to bring it back though.
