How do I clear Notifications from a new Banner?

Ever since the update to iOS 15 from 14.8 I am unable to clear a notification as I receive it in the banner while using phone. Previously I was able to swipe to click the "X" and clear the notification. Now I can only swipe down or up which sends the banner notification to the notification center where it can be deleted. Is this a bug that will be fixed in a later revision? Otherwise the new way of clearing a new banner notification is not nearly as efficient as it was previously.
