Apple did an update on my Mac today and now I can no longer access any financial sites. Restore is a dead end. Is this the end of my relationship with Apple?

Reboot your Mac and see if the problem is cleared. If rebooting your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode (hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (10 min) so be patient.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode forces the OS to clear certain caches and logs and do other miscellaneous housekeeping. It's non-destructive to user data so is safe to do. Very often certain weird software behavior is corrected by simply logging in this way as a troubleshooting method. When you're in safe boot, the machine will not be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and re-evaluate the issue again.

If the problem is still unresolved, please return here and post a reply and we’ll see what else we can come up with for help.

Try clearing the browser cache. When that task is complete, quit the browser then relaunch it and see if it returns to working.

Please see this article for information about clearing the cache data in Safari –

How to Clear Safari's Cache - MacRumors

If that doesn't resolve the problem, check with customer support at the site(s) that you're having trouble with. It may be that something on their end has changed. There were some recent expirations of internet security certificates that may have affected things.

Also know that the Safari browser for High Sierra is outdated and no longer supported by Apple. You might consider upgrading your macOS to a newer version of possible. Along with the newer OS will come a more current version of Safari.

See if you can access those sites with another stand-alone browser such as Firefox or Brave.

Some big Certificate issuer had Certificates expire, from the link to my site...

They're on this page: https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/

You'll probably want the non-cross signed .pem versions of the ISRG Root X1 and maybe the ISRG Root X2 (although I'm not sure what the X2 is used for).

Direct link to root in question: https://letsencrypt.org/certs/isrgrootx1.pem

I just double-clicked it and the opened in the keychain, although I already had a copy so it didn't appear to try to import.

Rebooted, no change. Went to safe mode, no change. Called Apple, they had me delete some cookies and all the history. No change. They then had me load the Chrome browser. That did work but is not a solution for me. I now use Firefox, but have to put in all the usernames and passwords. I was thinking about getting an i-phone but am reevaluating that.

Planned obsolescence.
