Dragging links over tabs in Safari 15

Is there a way to restore the old behavior of Safari which allowed you to drag a link from the current window over another tab and have the link open in that tab?

This has put a serious crimp in my browsing workflow.

I have this problem too. I drag links to a tab all day long (or at least I used to until the 15.0 update). It's great when I do a search, then I start dragging search results to a tab until I find a relevant page.

Now, when I drag a link to a tab, nothing happens when I hover the dragged link over the tab. When I drop the link, the link races back to its position on the page I dragged it from and nothing open is the tab I tried to drop it on.

Now, instead of a one handed drag operation, I have to command click (requires both hands) to open the link in a new tab, then delete the old irrelevant tab.

The link to the "Use tabs for webpages in Safari on Mac" doesn't mention dragging and dropping links on a previously opened tab.

I hope this will work again soon. It's a very big part of how I use Safari. Other browsers still allow the functionality.

Hi there Big Iron,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you are asking about dragging a link within Safari to create a new tab after updating your macOS. If we understand what you are trying to accomplish correctly, it should still work.

The key is to make sure when you drag that link to a new tab area, you've positioned your mouse (and the link) over the + sign for creating a new tab.

Take care.

That's the thing ... in previous versions of Safari, you could have a central hub tab and drag a link over another existing tab and have that tab open the link.

So ... if I do a search for some keywords and get a page full of hits, I could ⌘-click a link and create a new tab and see the web page representing the contents of that link. I could then ⌘-1 back to the browser hit page (or click on it's tab) and drag the next link over the newly created tab to see the contents of the next hit.

This allowed me to rapidly go through the contents of a bunch of hits without creating a large number of new tabs.

So ... I was wondering if there was some option that I was missing which would restore the convenience of that old workflow.
