Catalina and Big Sur both only support 64-bit applications, printers, and scanner drivers. If a vendor has not upgraded their application, printers, or scanner drivers for the newer operating systems, then you may be faced with additional expense for those 64-bit upgrades, or printer replacement if the vendor has chosen to not support it on current operating systems.

There is a free application named Go64 that will produce a list of all of your current 32-bit software on Sierra. Check with each vendor whose products are 32-bit for their commitment and availability of 64-bit upgrades for Big Sur. Just winging it, without due diligence planning, (as others have done) could be unfortunate.

The BIg Sur features are available on the Apple site.
