Add devices to ABM without physical contact

How can we add existing devices to ABM without the need to bring them in? We have iPads in stores spread around and we now want to enroll them in ABM and Intune. Is this doable without physical contact with the device? I know that previously it was a possibility to upload serials to ABM but that option doesn't seems to work anymore. It's not an option to have the stores send in their iPads just to get the serial uploaded to ABM.

You can't. Existing devices can only be enrolled to ABM using Apple Configurator 2.

There never was an option to upload serial numbers. It was simply a way to assign devices that were already in ABM to the MDM you wished to use (if they were not assigned to one), or to change which device they were assigned to. It was poorly worded and caused confusion, so it was updated to the device search we have today.

That said, you can still manually enroll a non-ABM device into the MDM of your choice. Each MDM has their own methods, and unfortunately, this enrollment can be removed.
