Audio Cutting Out on External Speakers/BT Headphones

Hello,

I have an iPhone X. When I connect it via Bluetooth to an external speaker or Bluetooth headphones, when the screen turns off the audio starts cutting out at regular intervals. I’ve determined it’s ONLY when the screen goes off, but it’s with most any external speaker - but not all.

When playing audio through my 2016 Toyota’s stock audio system from the Apple Music app, it doesn’t do it. However today I was playing a recording from Voice Memos and it was cutting out both when Bluetooth was connected to the radio and when it was plugged into the systems USB port.

Has anyone had experience with this issue?

Thanks for the follow up. In this case, it might be best to connect with Apple Support so they can run some remote testing on your iPhone to see if any hardware issues are picked up. You can connect with them at Get Support.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having issues with audio quality when using your iPhone with an external speaker (Bluetooth or wired). We'd like to ask a few questions to help determine the best path forward.

What's the iOS version installed on your iPhone? This is in Settings > General > About.
Do you find this issue happens in multiple locations? Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference
Do the Bluetooth devices you're using have the latest firmware updates installed?
You mentioned this happens when the screen is dark; how about when using the built-in iPhone speakers?

-iOS version 14.7.1. This issue has been in place for many months/over a year, at least the last two iOS updates (within iOS 14).

-Yes, this issue happens anywhere that I try to listen. It has happened when connected via bluetooth to an external speaker and listening to Apple Music, but more commonly happens when listening to Voice Memos or other audio. I don't think it's 100% related to the source of the audio, but I do know Apple Music causes the issue least often.

-Yes, these devices have their latest updates.

-The built-in speakers do not give me any issues; it's only when playing to an external speaker. It's 99% when I am connected to bluetooth. When I recently had the issue in my Toyota, that was the first time it's ever given me an issue when hard-wired to a speaker or audio system.
