FileVault error while trying to turn it on with admin user

Hi,

I have the issue that I want to enable FileVault for the first time one my MacbookPro with Big Sur in 11.6.

There is only one user registered on this Mac. This user has admin rights and a SecurityToken assigned to it.

No, when I am trying to enable FileVault (either through Terminal or the System Preferences UI) it won't work. It fails when I want to generate a recovery key (also using iCloud account for recovery raises the same issue) with the following prompt:

Authentication server failed to complete the requested operation.

Can anyone help? I already tried everything you can find on the web. Also recovery mode upon booting didn't help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Websockets,

Thanks for the detailed post!

Does this error still occur if you choose to store the recovery key locally, instead of using iCloud? Have you tried connecting to a different Wi-Fi network?

Also, when you unlocked the padlock in System Preferences -> Security and Privacy, did you use your password? Your fingerprint can't be used for this particular operation.
