Migration Assistant suck on 'Looking for Incompatible Software'

I am transferring the account over from a Macbook Air (2017, Mojave) to a new Macbook Air (M1, 2021, BigSur). I selected to only transfer the user account (ignore the system files, apps, etc...) so i'm not sure why it would be looking for incompatible software. I am using a thunderbolt to thunderbolt with a usb-c adaptor to do this. The cable is good since i just used it for another transfer. Any help is appreciated.

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Hi AGCschool,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're using Migration Assistant to transfer your user account files to your new MacBook but the transfer doesn't appear to progress past 'Looking for Incompatible Software'

Are both Mac's running the most recent macOS? If you need help to update, you can follow the steps outlined here: Update macOS on Mac

If they've already been updated, are you able to transfer your data via safe mode?

How to use safe mode on your Mac

You can also learn more about using Migration Assistant here: Move your content to a new Mac

We look forward to your reply.

Cheers!
