It may be a good idea to try resetting the printing system and (re-)adding the printer. Check whether the operating system suggests a suitable driver.

If not, you could try the (Dec 11, 2020) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS package from Apple at https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?locale=en_US. Look for something like the HP LaserJet 1012 version 2.0.4 driver mentioned in Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support.

Before testing drivers, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, et cetera).

I’ve had success using the driver for HP Laser Jet 1020. I’ve also had to delete and reinstall the printer each time I update the operating system.

The supported HP drivers for the 1020 are for Windows and Linux only. Do you mean another model?

As you can see, there are 1010, 1012, 1015, and 1022 printer drivers in the Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support article. BTW, the 1022 Mac driver 1.6.1 has been reported to work with an HP LaserJet 1020.

Jan is correct. DO NOT download drivers from HP. You need to delete your existing printer and add a new one. This is done though “Printers” in System Preferences. You will be offered an huge list of printers to choose from. Simply choose the HP 1022 Laser Jet, install it, and you’ll be good to go.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding, was that the (Dec 11, 2020) download from Apple (link above), not a download from HP? Have any earlier drivers been removed, and did you reset the printing system?

A Laserjet 1012 is a 20 year old printer that cost about $150, I think you have have gotten your money's worth out of it. Have you considered recycling it and moving on?

There were certain certificate problems during 2020 with HP downloads. The Dec 11, 2020 package download from Apple should have eliminated these difficulties. Sorry, cannot say why you experience this now.

You are correct. I have the 1022 driver installed for my 1020.
