Bluetooth doesn't work when Mac is hooked up to desktop through HDMI

I recently got nice desktop monitor from a friend and decided that I'd use that to do school when I'm at home instead of my laptop. I wanted to hook my Mac up to the monitor and was able to do with an HDMI cord. However, I have discovered that when my Mac is hooked up to the desktop, my airpods and any bluetooth devices do not pop up and do not connect to the laptop. I have tried doing the transfer from phone to mac and updating everything but it still does not work. How can I get bluetooth working so I can do school??
