Audio out of sync on external monitor

I’ve just started using an external monitor on MacBook Air, connected with a HDMI cord. Everything works well except from the audio - when watching videos there is a slight delay. The audio seems to be played a split second before the image that’s supposed to go with the audio is rendered on the screen. This makes watching films quite frustrating because everyone’s lips are out of sync. Does anyone have an idea of how I could fix this issue?

I should note that audio works perfectly on the Mac itself. The issue is the delay on the monitor.

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with audio being out of sync when watching a movie on an external monitor.

What's the source of the movie? Is it streaming? Which app? Have you tried multiple apps and sources? For example, does it happen with a movie purchased from iTunes as well as a Netflix video? What about YouTube videos?

Have you tried a different cable?

Do you have a way to try another monitor?

Yes, I’ve tried multiple video sources - different browsers, downloaded MP4 files, Netflix, YouTube etc. and the issue is the same for all of them. I’ve tried a different HDMI cable too, so the issue isn’t there. I’ve tried connecting the MacBook to a TV and still the audio is out of sync. I’ve also tried using a different (Windows) laptop and it’s the same issue again. So, it seems unlikely to be a hardware issue. I was wondering if I’ve maybe missed a setting or something
