Why can't I initiate a call by using a phone number in the "enter name, email, or phone number field in facetime on my macbook air?

If the number is in your Contacts can you connect with a number?

There would be no reason to spell out a phone number if they were in my contacts. The fact that Facetime is unable to simply dial a number I find frustrating.
BTW sorry for being cranky. I do appreciate your time and help.
