sleep button stopped working

iPhone SE 2020 sleep button (upper right hand) refuses to make the iPhone sleep. The button works. It clicks, and if you hold it down, you can command a shutdown. When in that mode, I have cycled power but, no go. It boots up, and still doesn't work. After half an hour, boom, it works. This has happened several times. Something is crapified. Ideas?

Hey Dannymac22,

We see you're unable to put the iPhone to sleep with the side button. Once the device is sleep, are you able to use the button to wake it? If you have a case and/or screen protector on the iPhone, does removing it help?

Is there any physical damage around the button? If there is dirt or debris around the buttons, review this article on how to clean it: Cleaning your iPhone

Let us know if any of this helps. Take care.

No dirt or damage. As I said, the button WORKS. I can hold it down and EVERY TIME it asks if I want to shut the phone off. The fault just happens once in a while. When I can sleep the phone with the button, I can easily wake it with the button. Maybe 10% of the time it doesn't work. During that time, repeated presses of the button don't sleep the phone. Not clear if then, when the phone auto-sleeps, the button will wake it.
