Aggregate Devices in Catalina 10.15.7 Only work in a particular order

Hey All, my set up is

iMac, OS Catalina 10.15.7

Logic Pro X

External Audio Interfaces MOTU 8PRE-es AND Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 (Giving me 12 XLR inputs and 30 Outputs)

Everything works fine.

My Issue is, when I create an Aggregate device in Audio Devices on the Mac, I can only get ALL inputs to work if I have the Scarlett as my Master Audio interface and clock source and my MOTU as the second Audio interface. However this setup limits my output capability as it only allows my Scarlett to give the outputs (Strange). I was really hoping that I could have the MOTU as the Master interface with the Scarlett as my second but this DOES NOT WORK exactly as it should. If I build the Aggregate device with the MOTU as the Master and the Scarlett 2nd, then I only get the MOTU inputs working and NOT the Scarlett inputs (Really weird)?? I have tried MANY different things to solve this issue but with no luck so far.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Hello rjprod,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like the Aggregate Devices you've created on your Mac are only working as expected in a specific order. We'd like to help.

Have you tried removing the Aggregate Device you've already created and then tried recreating it? If not, we would suggest trying this. Here's how to Combine multiple audio interfaces by creating an Aggregate Device.

Do you have an available macOS updates? Check, back up your Mac, and then install any compatible updates if possible. Here's how to How to update the software on your Mac.

It may also be helpful to start up you Mac in safe mode and then test to see if this issue continues. Here's How to use safe mode on your Mac.

We would also suggest disconnecting and reconnecting all of your devices. Try different ports or cables if possible.

Have a nice day.

Hi bailier, problem solved and my bad.

I only solved this problem yesterday 16/10/2021. What I found I was doing wrong was that when I was in Logic Pro X and starting new "Audio" tracks for a new Project, I was not loading enough audio tracks into the session. I needed to load 30 tracks (Inputs). I was only loading 14 (8+6). My MOTU 8PRE-ES actually has 24 Inputs and my Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 has 6 inputs. So now, this way I can have my MOTU interface as my "MASTER" and my Focusrite Scarlett as my second interface. And then all I have to do is delete the unwanted tracks. DONE!!!!

Hopefully this may help some else with a similar issue...........

Cheers and many thanks

P.S. I did update my macOS to "Big Sur" but of course this didn't solve anything.........
