Where does the Personal TXT get provided?

The step that says to enter your Personal TXT that is provided during setup is unclear. "During setup" refers to which service's setup? Where should I look for the information needed for this step?

I just did the same thing. Found out what I did wrong and how the support article could be written to help people like me. I started the process as is properly done on iCloud web account and then got as far as 2nd step, which is to put in the email addresses for each name. Then I was shutting down for the evening and printed out the support instructions to pick it up the next day. This lead me to directly go to the domain name registrar the next day and follow the printed out instructions rather than start where I left off on the iCloud web page procedure where the next page in the procedure shows the 2 TXTs, MX and CNAME. From there it was a piece of cake. The box canyon was perhaps that the support article led me all the way to step 5 without any clue that all I needed to do was proceed inside iCloud webpage.

I can confirm that I did receive the personal TXT record after the email verification--through email and on icloud.com .

Now, Apple has a problem with verifying the MX and TXT dns records. In the instructions, it says to REMOVE your existing MX records. But this isn't possible since Apple requires that verification email be from an existing custom domain email, but in order for me to have an existing domain email, I need MX records. I may have to agree that is is broken, or very un-Apple like because it does not "just work".

Also, notice that in one instruction it says to use " " around the v=spf1 redirect=icloud.com and the other instruction says not to use " " around it.

The "existing" email address has to be the one that belongs to the domain. For example, if your domain is mydomain.com, then there has to be an existing email with that domain, for example, bob.smith@mydomain.com . Then you use bob.smith@mydomain.com to enter in the "existing" email address. Then Apple will send the TXT instruction in step 5 to bob.smith@mydomain.

I know this defeats the purpose. So you'll need to use Namecheap, Godaddy, Google Workspace, or another email provider to get that first custom domain email before iCloud+ can create other custom domain emails. Again, this is weird and Apple should change it so the first custom domain email can created with iCloud+.

Greetings Mike Antos,

It sounds like you have some questions about setting up a domain with iCloud and have reviewed Set up an existing domain with iCloud Mail for the steps.

As you’re working through the process of setting things up on the iCloud Mail set up page, are you seeing a second TXT setting being provided to you? You’ll be able to find a link to get started in this article Use Custom Email Domain with iCloud Mail

Thank you.

Yes, that is what I have questions about. At this link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212524 step 5 reads like this:

Then enter the information for your Personal TXT Record provided during set up.

TXT:

host: [example.com].

points to: [personal TXT record provided during set up]

TTL: 3600

My problem is I don't know what this step is talking about. What is the personal TXT record provided during setup? Setup of what service?

Mike Antos,

Please let us know whether you're seeing two TXT Records when working through Use Custom Email Domain with iCloud Mail, and visiting the included site, iCloud.com/settings/customdomain, which walks you through the set up process on the iCloud end. One appears the same as provided in Set up an existing domain with iCloud Mail and one a personalized one. Or are you only seeing one and if so is it the same as in Set up an existing domain with iCloud Mail?

Thank you.

The problem is that when I follow the instructions Apple provides I get to the point where it recognizes that I have my domain with Godaddy. I supply the email addresses I want for me and my family as instructed. Then I click continue where it says:

Step 3: Finish setting up the domain

The domain “[mydomain.com]” is registered with GoDaddy. After all emails are verified, continue to sign in with GoDaddy.

A window pops up that, I assume, is supposed to be going to GoDaddy so I can login but it is completely blank and does nothing.

I've done this on Windows and Mac, Chrome, MS Edge, and Safari. Used incognito browsers, cleared cached, blah, blah, blah

Hey Apple, your tool isn't working. Don't sell a feature if you cannot make it work.

Hi Mike- I know exactly what you're asking as I have the same question! The bloke who responded didn't seem to be of any help. Did you sort this out?

My guess is the email titled 'Finish setting up your custom domain' has a different TXT value to the 'Change your DNS records' TXT value. I'm yet to try it as I was looking for an answer before going too far.

Same problem here. I've done steps 1 and 2 for my domain with existing addresses, I get to step 3 and it correctly says that my domain is hosted at 1and 1, but when I click on "verify domain", just an open windows pops up. At no point I get an e-mail with the individual TXT settings, so there is no way to set-up the domain correctly.

Please Apple, either fix the process, or at least provide a way to get to your personal TXT settings outside the process.
