When setting up an existing domain with iCloud mail,

do I use the MX01 and MX02 functions to setup me@icloud.com and mywife@mycloud.com?

And if so, shouldn't the line above, which in the instructions reads

MX:

host: [example.com]. -- shouldn't that be the email address, me@domain.com? Then the mx02 would be mywife@domain.com?

points to: mx01.mail.icloud.com.

priority: 10

TTL: 3600

Otherwise, how do the machines know which is my wife's email and which is mine?

Thanks,

--Bill

No. You are not setting up email addresses there. You are setting up the domain redirection from your domain host’s config screen.

If both you and your wife use the same email domain i.e you@emaildomain.com and wife@emaildomain.com you setup the redirection to iCloud from your domain’s configuration screen for the domain. This applies to all email addresses for that domain name.

Then all email sent to @emaildomain gets redirected to iCloud.

Once that is set up, then you need to configure the email addresses for each person as shown in step 2 here: Add a custom email domain for iCloud Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support

This has nothing to do with your ISP. The setup for this happens on the web site for your Domain host. Whoever is hosting the name after the @ symbol in your email address, normally that is not your ISP.

You cannot redirect your ISP’s email to iCloud, that’s not what this is for.

You redirect your custom domain so email sent to you@customdomain.com is sent to iCloud.

If you are using your ISP’s email address then you don’t have a custom domain you can redirect to iCloud.

Phil,

Okay, I went to my domain manager, Network Solutions, and changed the MX setting and the CNAME setting as per the image below, but there isn't any TXT setting available. Does this look correct to move my domain, williamlspencer.com over to iCloud.com? I tried to change the SMTP setting to icloudmailadmin.com but it wouldn't accept it, so, as you see, it still points to

netsolmail.net. Any idea what this should be changed to?

The SRV points to hostingprlatform.com, but if I can get the domain email transferred to iCloud.com, then I plan to drop the hosting platform altogether, because I won't need it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The instructions from Apple should explicitly say that step 1 is setting up iCloud.com, because during the iCloud set up process, it's necessary to have connected email for family sharing members.

If one has first gone to the domain holder and changed the DNS settings, then you won't have email during the iCloud set-up process which you need to have.

I spent 45 min. on the chat with Network Solutions to get the NetSol email returned to where it started, so that I could do the iCloud portion of the setup.

Another hint: if you're a complete beginner, like me, make a screenshot of the DNS settings before you change anything, so you can change it back when you've made a mistake (such as I made).

Now I'll finish the iCloud set up, then go on the Chat feature with network solutions and ASK THEM TO MAKE THE CHANGES.

What think you, Phil???

I was unable to complete the iCloud.com setup. Yesterday, I used the iCloud.com setup to send an email to my wife, inviting her to join our Family Sharing. She clicked on it to join.

Today, when I tried to complete the Family Sharing setup on iCloud.com, I was unable to do this.

I can get to this screen . . .

And sure enough, on my wife's email there is the email asking for verification. However, when I click on the "Verify" button, it doesn't change anything on this setup page. It still shows that it needs to be verified, and I can't get any further. I re-sent the email and clicked on "Verify" three times -- same results.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

--Bill
