Using @icloud.com email as Apple ID

Hi there,

Writing this email on behalf of a friend. So she's been an apple customer forever and has her @btinternet.com (provided by ISP) as her Apple ID.

Along the way, when @icloud.com emails became a thing, she set up firstname.surname@me.com (& @cloud.com) but then a couple of years later, got married so was able to also set up firstname.newsurname@icloud.com

We're now in a position where she wants to make her @icloud.com email her primary apple ID but because it was set up as an alias, it cannot be used.

Is there any way to use the firstname.newsurname@icloud.com as the primary apple id. The ISP email is about to be ceased.

Hope this post makes sense.

You can only use the original @iCloud alias as an Apple ID. Based on what I have read, I suggest she leave her Apple ID email address as a 3rd party email address because she has more flexibility if she needs to change the email address. For example, if the Apple ID got compromised, she can change it to another address. I also have read of many people who were locked out of their accounts when they forgot their password. Since the recovery email address is the @iCloud email address, if she forgets her password, she also can't access her email to get emails from Apple to recover her account. She can set a rescue email address, but for some people, this hasn't worked. I suggest she get another 3rd party email address.

Note the restrictions in the article.
