This is Not an Option:

You cannot unlock it. The person signed in on it must contact Apple, themselves. The seller should have known better. This is the site they should have used: What to do Before you Sell, Give Sway, or Trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The foresight is that activation lock is an anti-theft measure and no one should sell or give away a device which hasn't been properly prepared. It it was easy to override, the anti-theft measure would be worthless.

Seller abandoned the iPad years ago. I acquired it at an estate sale hoping to get some service from it. Apparently Apple did not have the foresight to provide a solution.

I can prove who I am and that I legally purchased it. What else should be needed?

This is just an affirmation that I should always avoid Apple products.

That may be, but you are not the person who activated the lock. And that is who needs to “unlock” it.

If you do not like that, you should not buy one with the activation lock enabled.
