Ipod not connecting after itunes update

I have an iPod nano and everything was working fine until I did the iTunes update. Now the iPod will not connect to iTunes when I open them/connect it to the computer with a USB. How can I connect my iPod to the updated iTunes so I can update my music?

Windows, Windows 10

Greetings DWolfsbane,

We understand that you're having a problem with your iPod nano being unable to connect to iTunes, so let's check this out.

When you connect your iPod nano to the computer, are you seeing that the iPod is being recognized or charging? If not, try using a different cable to see if that clears up what is occurring. Even if you do see that the iPod is charging, still try a different cable to see if that helps with connecting to iTunes.

Check out the following resources to see if the steps in either help to clear up what may be occurring. If the steps don't help, let us know which iPod nano you have as well as the software version for the iPod and iTunes that is installed.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

DWolfsbane,

Thanks for the clarification and update of this.

It does sound like an update to the iPod software may be best to see if that allows iTunes to read it, so let's focus on that.

As you're seeing this version of iTunes isn't reading, we'll try to reinstall the later version of iTunes that you had, but let's be sure there's a backup of your iTunes files before we do this. This will help to be sure that deleting the newer version before installing the previous version won't cause data loss as you'll have a second copy. Check out the section labeled "Back up your library and media files" of the following resource as that will walk you through the steps, but the entire resource is helpful:

Back up and restore your iTunes library on your PC

Once you've successfully made a copy, you can proceed with removing the current version to prepare to download a previous version. If you need help with removing iTunes, we'll include a resource below. In addition to that, we'll have the link for you to locate a previous version that you know works with your iPod for the download.

We hope that is able to resolve what is occurring here. Should you need more in depth help with this, you can Contact Apple Support to receive direct help in real time.

Have a great day!

DWolfsbane,

We're unable to see the error message that you're receiving, but let's see how we can help.

In regards to wanting to be sure that your playlists remain, we'd recommend creating a backup of your iTunes library. This would help to make sure that your files are safe in the event that you have to remove or install the software. For help with that, use the following resource:

Back up and restore your iTunes library on your PC

If you need further help with that, or see an error, Contact Apple Support so this can be looked into in more detail.

Take Care!

A different cord doesn't help. Yes it is charging and my computer recognizes it, only iTunes doesn't recognize it since the update (I'm assuming it's an incompatibility between the versions, but I don't know how to update my iPod's software since it won't connect to iTunes. How do I upgrade the iPod software or how do I go back to my old version of iTunes to make it all work together?

iTunes version: 12.12.1.1
