Tracker ball issues
The tracker ball / pad on my 10 year old MacBook Air has stopped working. The pointer moves but I can’t click on anything.
would a mouse solve the problem?

You could see if an external trackpad or mouse may resolve the issue. If an external devices fixes the issue, then your internal trackpad could have a hardware issue.
You could also try isolating this to see if it happens while you are in a temporary new user, which can show if the issue happens in any user you have or your specific user, as the settings in a new user haven't been changed or customized.
