I can't type a plus sign or underscore on my 2019 Macbook Pro

Suddenly I have discovered I can't type a plus sign on my Macbook Pro (running Big Sur 11.6). I have an external keyboard with numeric keypad - neither the laptop's keyboard or the external keyboard will type a plus or underscore. Did I do something or mistakenly click a setting or is this due to a software update? Help!

What language keyboard layout are you typing in? What does get produced when you press the key with + or _ printed on it?

I’m using the US English keyboard. No character appears when I type shift and plus or shift and underscore - in any application (internet browser, word processing, etc.).
