can't hook up external monitor - screen flashes

New macbook pro 16". Tried to hook up new monitor with new USB-C to VGA adapter, and screen flashes

Tried changing refresh rate of screen and that didn't help. i also tried unplugging and restarting machine several times

By design, all screens flash ONCE to signal you that a new display has been added.


But the flashing should immediately subside. Possibly if the connection is unstable, and is seen as: a display is added, a display is removed, a display is added, and so on would it continue to flash.


What Make&Model display or a link to its capabilities?

what cables, adapters, and docks?
