My iPhone has a question mark in it in the view of the finder. And it also doesnt have an iphone icon on the side panel. I've tried factory resetting the phone and it didn't help. Any idea what to do to restore the proper icons (I didn't have this problem with my previous phone)?

From your post, it sounds like your Mac is displaying the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a question mark. To start, which macOS version is the computer running? If an update is needed, let's ago ahead and do that now: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support
Does the issue occur in safe mode? Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Is the iPhone correctly recognized on the iPhone & MacBook Pro?

Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in

If yes, then from the iPhone and Mac -> sign out of iCloud and then sign back in.
I'm running 11.6 of Big Sur which software update says is the latest, I tried rebooting my macbook in safemode. The macbook did not find the phone even though it was physically plugged in. Then I rebooted it into normal mode and the issue still persists.

I'm having the same issue with my new iPhone 13 Pro. Safe mode didn't change anything.
I have the same question mark on my iPhone 13 Pro. I'm using MacOS BigSur 11.6.
One thing though, my data is able to sync with my MacBook Pro.
This issue was fixed for me with the update today.

Yes, I have been trying to update since this morning: nothing to update for now.
I have Catalina and that update should resolve the issue
