Hi,
Since I switched to Safari 15, when opening several web pages in tabs, they load only when I access them instead of being preloaded in the background.
Is there a way to set that back to the previous behavior?

Check again for updates as Safari 15.1 was released today Oct 27 for both Catalina and Big Sur
No issue since I switched to Safari Technology Preview (https://developer.apple.com/safari/technology-preview/). With some luck it will be the version used also in MacOS Monterrey 12.1 which should be released soon (haven't checked the beta/rc at all, maybe somebody could confirm?).
It seems that "Safari Technology Preview 134" (just released on 27.10.2021) fixes this. More testing to come...

Only the active tab loads. Tried with a guest account, same thing. Just tried on my wife MacbookPro, same thing.
@sjordi: nope, all good here, I switched back from Safari to the standard one just after the 12.1 upgrade. Safari Version 15.2 (17612.3.6.1.6). So maybe this time it's really due to your settings or something local ? Can you try with a new user on your system for example ?

It appears to be a bug, not a feature that’s been removed.
This is a really frustrating issue. It worked on the previous version(s) and has now stopped. I use a lot of groups of tabs and now have to click on each tab to load the content, rather than having it all load in the background, as it did previously.
Chrome does not have the issue, and is soon going to replace Safari as my primary browser, as I need this age old functionality to work.
I am running 15.1 on Monterey as well and I have to say this is beyond frustrating!!!!
Safari is supposed to be getting faster not WAY slower.
The whole point of loading a set of web pages in tabs is to have quick access to them, NOT super-slow-motion access!?!!
Apple PLEASE FIX THIS!?!!
I also use a lot of tab groups by opening all the bookmarks in the same folder, so this is extremely annoying. I guess I'm going back to FireFox if it isn't fixed soon. And why has Apple taken away this feature? At least make it an option to choose between power-saving and speed.
SafariTP134 BigSur doesn't load tabs in the background for me but does load each one faster than Safari15.1 when clicked on. So frustrating. I just want to continue with the feature we've had for years (background tab loading for speed).
I think there is background loading in this preview version, not just loading faster. I have a tab group of 8 different pages and when I switch tabs there is no sign of loading but the full content is there already
Same issue here, submitted as "Bug" ID FB9698324 a few weeks ago, no feedback since. I hope (a little) that this will be fixed in macOS Monterey.
I just upgraded under Bis Sur and now have Safari Version 15.1 (16612.2.9.1.30, 16612)
Still doesn't load tabs in the background at all.
