flip emoji and numbers keys on keyboard?

Got the new iPad mini with IOS 15. They changed the keyboard layout so that the emoji key is the first on the bottom left instead of the numbers key. It’s driving me crazy! Is there any way to flip them back? I’ve looked in settings and on the support web site. Nothing.

the listing asking for device here isn’t even updated to include the mini 6. 🤷🏼‍♀️

You are not the first to complain of this change - and are unlikely to be the last.

Before this change to the keyboard layout occurred, the location of the left numbers key was a fixed location - and established muscle memory would always direct your finger to this “touch point” on the screen. Sadly, this is no longer the case.

This change is not configurable.

This change is in part due to “hardware” - in that the relative key positions remain as they were on older models of iPad. This, in part, contributes to the problem - as users of multiple devices expect the keyboard layout to be consistent between devices.

It is this very lack of consistency that creates the biggest problem. Hiding (i.e., uninstalling) the Emoji and alternative language keyboards (if used) can work around this issue - but results in losing direct access to Emojis (and alternative keyboards) when required.
