Clear Old Phone for Travel

Hello! We will travelling soon. I don't want to carry my current phone with me each day as I won't be using it as a phone. I have an old iPhone 6 that I was thinking of taking instead. I won't be heartbroken if it gets lost. I want to wipe it clean as much as possible so if I do lose it/gets stolen they won't my stuff. I want to just have internet access when on wifi, maps.me app and maybe be able to login to Facebook if we need to get some info. What should I do? Just factory reset it? Can I use it without linking it to an apple ID? I was also thinking that I could take pics on it and send them to my good phone each night via Airdrop, but that probably requires it set up. Suggestions??

Hi Shananigans26,

There would be several positives when using your own Apple ID. You'd have access to your purchases and services. For example, if you purchased a third-party Maps app, then you could redownload it using that account. Instead of having to purchase it again on newly created Apple ID.

However, if you were simply wanting to use the Apple Maps app, then it wouldn't require you to use your older account. That's a built-in app in the operating system.

We'd suggest to use a passcode to secure the device, while traveling: Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

To keep any information you do set up with it, secure.

You mentioned using apps like Facebook. This app is free from the App Store, so it could be redownloaded using your existing Apple ID, or purchased (for free) using a newly created Apple ID.

You would also have access to Wi-Fi no matter the account set up, as long as the device isn't disabled or locked.

To transfer the photos between devices, we'd suggest using AirDrop: How to use AirDrop on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let us know if that clears up your questions!

Take care.

Hello Shananigans26,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you'd like to know how to set up an older iPhone, so you don't have to carry your new iPhone while traveling. We'll do our best to assist.

It sounds like you don't want to use your current Apple ID to set up this older iPhone. If that's the case, you could create a new Apple ID: How to create a new Apple ID

Alternatively, you could use your Apple ID and not log in to services like iCloud, to avoid any data being on the device.

Does that help in any way? Let us know.

Cheers!
