MX Record Error for Custom Domain Setup

Hi

I hope you can assist me with my custom domain setup with my iCloud account.

I have been really excited for this feature but have been struggling to get it setup. I have purchased a custom domain with GoDaddy.com (registrar). I have followed the instructions regarding the setup process apple and watched numerous youtube videos to see what other methods to try (e.g. adding a period at the end of the MX record). Sadly nothing has worked. I subsequently reached out to GoDaddy customer support to ask them for assistance. They confirmed that the setup is correct as per instruction and stated that I should reach out to apple to understand why this is not working.

I have included various screenshots to assist.

Please can you point me in the right direction as I really want to use this feature.

Thanking you in advance.

Below is the GoDaddy correspondence confirming all is setup correctly from the registrar's perspective:

For people like me, reaching this page through Google searching for a solution: Apparantly Apple checks the TTL. It has to be exactly 1 hour (3600 seconds) for all records provided, otherwise, the validation will fail.

So... mine just started working! Yay! I think I see the differences in what you need to do. For MX, MX, TXT, TXT in your 'Records' screen shot above, change "thejordanfamily.co.za" to "@" (without the quotation marks).

Then, the SPF record (the first TXT you have listed), put quotations around the Value. So, it should look like this:

"v=spf1 redirect=icloud.com"

I hope this information helps!

Interesting... I too use GoDaddy and it worked fine as I described it. These things can be really finicky though... if one letter is off, or if there's one space too many in something, that would be enough to cause it all to fail. And, honestly, I got three different ways of doing it from Apple. I followed and used the language they gave me from within the iCloud settings page... not from the email they sent (which had it different) or the support page link (which was also different from the other two). So definitely follow what they tell you to use from within your iCloud settings account for the custom domain. Hopefully you figure it out soon! Best of luck to you.

Hey Jordj939,

We would be happy to assist you with your iCloud Mail account.

Is your custom domain completely set up? Sometimes an email is sent to finish setting up the custom domain that is created. Check for an email to see if that is the case.

If you are unable to find an email, you can reach out to GoDaddy.com for more assistance, or you can get your DNS records needed from iCloud.com/settings

Here is how to Set up an existing domain with iCloud Mail. This will finish setting up you custom domain with iCloud Mail.

Have a great day!

Hi judysings

Thank you for your response.

I do have confirmation that the domain is setup completely. I also waited and allowed it time to “settle in” yet no joy when trying to finalize the custom domain from the iCloud side. I am still receiving the MX Error message. I have followed the instructions, is there anything else you can share with me that may help?

Do you know if anyone else who has been successful using GoDaddy as their registrar?

Thanks again

Hi Jord...

Any luck with this? I'm trying to set up my custom domain today (bringing it over from Gmail). I'm at the same point you are after about an hour... "Check MX Records"... "Check TXT Record". It says to wait a few hours so I'll give it a go a bit later and report back. I did notice that you listed your full URL for the 'Host' values... where they told me to simply use "@". I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Maybe you should just use "a"? Or maybe I should be typing in my full URL! Lol.

Either way, let me know if you've had any success with this. Thank you!

As an update, I am in talks with Apple technical team as they are looking into the issue and have not yet given me a solution to try. At this stage I will try anything.

Thanks Matt13 for your suggestion. I am using GoDaddy and therefore get an error message when I try place the TXT value in quotations as you suggest, however, have changed the other value to “@“ with out the quotations as you suggested and will wait the 48 hours to see if that does the trick (fingers crossed)

If anyone has other suggestions/solutions please let me know and I’ll try them too

Thanks everyone

Hi there @Jordj939 - did you get any help from Apple? I am having the exact same problem with Namecheap and as far as I know, I have setup everything right. I have managed to setup O365 and Zoho mail records with one go - this just seems to get stuck with this Check MX records and nothing seems to help.

Namecheap support is just useless so I do not even try to get help from there.
