Can't transfer songs from files to iTunes

I cannot transfer songs from my files to iTunes, even though I was able to do it normally by drag-and-drop a couple of months ago. The songs are all mp3, so there is no format problem, and I have tried everything: Drag-and-drop, "Open With iTunes", copy them to the "Automatically Add To iTunes" folder and nothing works. I even deleted and redownloaded iTunes, to no avail. Anyone help? Thanks!

If you're still having a problem, make sure you have updated your version of iTunes to the very latest one.

  • If you downloaded iTunes directly from Apple, and especially if you're using a non-English language version, use Help/Check for Updates to make sure you're on iTunes 12.12.1.1 which was released on 23rd September - four days after the previous version. If you're still on 12.12.0.6, update now
  • If you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store, the update should be automatic. You will not see an option under the Help menu for Check for Updates.

Hi BuckMcDuck,

We see you're having trouble adding content to your iTunes library. We have included resources on how to get that done on both Mac and Windows computers:

Import media from a computer to iTunes on PC

Import music from a computer to Music on Mac

We hope this helps get things sorted.

Take care.

Are these perhaps tracks you've ripped from YouTube using a third party tool? There have been some similar threads lately. I'd recommend you purchase the tracks from the iTunes Store, Amazon, or similar, or take out a subscription to a streaming service such as Apple Music or Spotify, but failing that you likely need to find a new tool.

I think something will have changed at YouTube, causing some incompatibility with the tool. In one instance it seems that files were downloaded in .m4a format but wrongly labelled as .mp3. Other software can be more forgiving over file extensions not matching internal format, iTunes not so much.

You are the best person in the world Andre--I tried everything and this worked like a charm. Ran songs that Itunes would not accept through this and Itunes will now accept. I think prior comment about Youtube converters not all working well is exactly correct. Thank you thank you!!

I was struggling with this for months but I just fixed it. I used cloud convert to convert my mp3 file to a WMA file (windows media audio) then I dragged that file into my iTunes library. It’s not supported by iTunes so it asked if I wanted to convert it to mp3, I said yes then it did so and added it to my iTunes library
