force quit error

Regarding a new Macbook Pro that seems to lock up giving a Force quit notice, and the spinning ball. This laptop is with my son at college, so I do not have access to it. He primarily is using for Photoshop, but this is ocorring whenever he opens any app. Any suggestions and what might be causing this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ken
