Is iPad 9 a big upgrade over iPad 7?

I currently have the 2019 iPad and am looking into the 2021 iPad base model that just released. I feel like the 2019 version is not very future proof and that 32 gb won’t be sufficient for much longer. Am I right? Or are they basically the same device?

The iPad 7 and iPad 9 as pretty the same entry level device hardware wise. The only difference is the newer faster CPU and a slightly better screen.

Storage space is entirely customizable during purchase, so just because your current one has 32GB does not mean the iPad 9 needs to have that. In fact it starts at 64GB.

Storage space aside, they currently can run the same OS version, and will continue to do so for the next several years. The iPad 7 may stop getting support in 3 or 4 years. The iPad 9 in 6 or 7.

If you really want a significant bump I'd wait a couple more years before upgrading.

You are correct.

64 GBs is barely enough internal data storage in 2021.

You should be considering the more future-proof 256 GBs internal storage model.

The 9th gen iPad is 3 CPU versions ahead of your iPad 7th gen, which ONLY has a Apple A10 Fusion CPU.

The 9th gen iPad has the A13 Bionic chip with neural, learnmg engine.

The 9th gen iPad has the new FaceTime CenterStage wide angle cameras

The screen on the new 9th gen IPad, while NOT a laminated, bonded, display, now has the new TruTone room light environment calibration feature that adjusts your iPad's color temperature in relation to the outside, surrounding room lighting.

The 2019, 7th gen iPad has none of this,

A 64 GBs storage iPad starts out with approx. 60 GBs.,after initial internal flash drive formatting.

Minus approx. 6.5 GBs for iOS/iPadOS leaves between 53-54 GBs.

Minus 3-6 GBs, for iOS/iPadOS system operational reserve, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES, to ensure/insure normal, expected operation of iOS/iPad OS, leaves approx. between 48-50 GBs of actual, usable data storage space.

256 GBs storage iPad starts out with approx. 238.5GBs.,after initial internal flash drive formatting.

Minus approx. 6.5 GBs for iOS/iPadOS leaves 231.0 GBs.

Minus 3-6 GBs, for iOS/iPadOS system operational reserve, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES, to ensure/insure normal, expected operation of iOS/iPad OS, leaves approx. between 224-228 GBs of actual, usable data storage space.

This all depends on how you use the device. If you are going to be taking a lot of photos and using a lot of apps, then 32GB will likely not be enough for you.

I have pre-selected both iPad's you have mentioned in your question.
