FaceTime Issue on MacBook Air

FT works perfectly on my iMac and iPad, but not perfectly on my MacBook Air. Both the iMac and the MacBook are signed in on my Apple ID, and both have exactly the same settings in FT Preferences. Yet some of my contacts which work normally on the iMac will not work on the MacBook?

Hello, davidfromsydenham. Thank you for posting to the Apple Support Communities. We understand the situation you are noticing when starting FaceTime calls on your Macbook. We know that staying connected with your contacts must be important to you, and we’re happy to help research any possible solutions here.

From what we gather, you are noticing this issue only with one device that you use with your FaceTime and Apple ID accounts. In a situation like this, there are several troubleshooting steps that we would suggest starting with. Please complete each step in the following Apple Support article before testing FaceTime calls again on your Mac:

If FaceTime isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support

If you continue to notice the same issue after completing the troubleshooting steps above, we can help you more. A problem like this could be related to the network that you are using. To find out more, can you tell us if you are able to make FaceTime calls normally after connecting your Macbook to a different connection?

Does this also only seem to be an issue with certain contacts that you call using your Macbook? Or does this happen with all contacts that you attempt to FaceTime with?

We hope that these troubleshooting steps help you and we look forward to your reply.

Have a great day!

Thank you for replying back here, davidfromsydenham. We understand that you are still noticing the same issue when making FaceTime calls with your MacBook.

To confirm, were you able to use the instructions in the article we provided earlier to back up your Mac and install any available system updates? This step would be important to ensure that your version of FaceTime is using the latest software.

Since you are only noticing this issue with certain contacts, we’d like to be sure that you are attempting to use FaceTime with the correct address for each contact. To find out more, can you tell us if you are attempting to contact them at an email address, or phone number? Do you use the same email or phone number to FaceTime these contacts with your other devices?

If needed, you may want to check the contact information on your Mac and make any needed adjustments. The following Apple Support article explains how you can update the contacts on your Mac:

Please reply back here to continue.

Cheers!

Hello JJRASC,

  1. Yes ... I keep both MacBook and iMac backed up using Time Machine (on different external drives of course.) Both are updated to Big Sur Version 11.6
  2. I have done a side by side study of contacts that don't work, and can find no obvious pattern. For example I have a brother in Saskatchewan with contact addresses: both a phone number and an email address works on my iMac, neither work on my MacBook. They are exactly the same numbers/addresses. Incidentally, they both also work on my iPad.
  3. I sure can't figure it out!

Regards,

Dave

Hello JJRASC,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried all of the suggestions on this document, although none of them apply to this situation.

I have tried using a different network ... still the same problem.

Re: your last question, it applies to only certain contacts that I try to call on my MacBook. Yet exactly the same contacts from exactly the same contacts card work just fine on my iMac! Both computers are on the same network. (For that matter FaceTime works just fine with those contacts on my iPad.) My Contacts are synced to all devices.

I've tried everything I can think of and everything I can find online with no success. I hope you can help because often it is much more convenient for me to use the MacBook.

Dave
