Can't "find my" AirPods even if I'm holding them!

So if I try to use the "Find My" for either my AirPods or AirPods Pro the app will only give me the last location they were when i used them and not where they currently are. They need to be connected. So they also won't actually play a sound either. AppleCare support said that this is just how it is now, even though this was a functionality I had with my old AirPods a year ago.

I'm not sure why Apple would change this. If I was using my AirPods I wouldn't need to find them and giving me the last location isn't really what I need. Has anyone else had this issue?

Last location, or current connection, is exactly how find my works for AirPods. Learn more: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207581. The functionality hasn't changed.
