Airdrop can't find devices from share popup

Airdrop can't see nearby devices if I try to share a file directly from finder. It opens the little popup, and never shows devices.

It always works fine when I go to airdrop in finder. It sees nearby devices and I can drag files to their icon.

I can have the airdrop finder window open, with devices showing there, and at the same time try to airdrop a file from the share menu in finder, and that popup will never show nearby devices.

It's been like this for a long time now, but it did initially work as expected when I first got my laptop.

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on?

Hello Mr_Lundy,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you are only able to AirDrop from Finder if you go to AirDrop directly, not individual files.

If multiple devices are available, does this happen when your are AirDropping to a particular device? Try the applicable steps from the 'If you can't see the other device in AirDrop' section of Use AirDrop on your Mac.

If those steps don't help and if this happens with multiple devices or you don't have another device to test, try testing in another user account on your Mac. That will isolate whether this only occurs in your user account. If you don't have another admin user to test, you can set one up temporarily using the guidance from Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Have a great day!
