Alarm volume becomes quiet

My alarm will chime 1 or 2 times at normal volume, then immediately chime so softly I cannot hear it, it certainly wouldn’t wake me up. I have tried turning off and on the change with buttons, followed by hard reset. It may work OK for a while and then it goes back to turning silent after one or two chimes. What is going on?
