Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support. Important: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

My Answers to your Questions:

Note: These are user-to-user forums. So, what I mention is based off of prior experiences. I do not work for Apple.

A1. You'd have to have a third-party come over an perform this. But that if iffy, because of COVID concerns.

A2. If it is seen, I would think not.

Q3. sending it in by mail takes how long?

A3. For my Mac send in, it's always been 3-5 days between send it and receiving, from what I recall (and a couple more if there is a holiday getting in the way of delivery).

Q4. "what if it is damaged in the mail?"

A4. This is something you will have to agree to upon send it in, when it comes to Terms & Conditions of doing so. I've had water in min when delivered, and that was deemed faulty, because of it overheating and creating condensation (most nothing occurring upon delivery)

Q5. "does apple send me a box to ship it in?"

A5. Yes. It holds up, comes with shipping information, and it has hard foam for safe packing.

Q6. "will they back up everything for me and put it back on to the mac so i don't have to?"

A6. No. They recommend that you back it up, prior to shipping it. Apple does not do they from their end. This is mentioned in paperwork that comes with the box.

Two Things:

• Use Send-In Service:

Don't drive? If this is covered under warranty, then use send-in service. If not, then ask Apple if you can still send it in for service.

• Confirm the Microphone's Connection:

First off, see if the microphone is even seen: 

1. Hold Down: the Option key
2. Click: the Apple menu
3. Choose: System Information or System Report
4. Select: Audio from the list on the left
5. Look For: any internal or external microphone:

Is it seen?
