Is a Big Sur time machine backwards compatible with Catalina?

I want to upgrade to Big Sur but I’m a bit hesitant to since I like Catalina. If I were to upgrade to Big Sur and then make a time machine backup there, would I then be able to use that Big Sur backup to restore my data on macOS Catalina if I decide to revert back?

Okay, I tested it out myself and the backups are not backwards compatible.

Personally - if upgrading to Big Sur from Catalina - would put the Catalina Time Machine Backup drive aside and unused. Would start a New Time Machine Backup on a new and separate drive.
