Upgrading from Catalina to Big Sur

I'm terrified of upgrading OS because it's such a pain to backup data. Is there an easy way? And how do I retrieve it?

I'm completely different -- I would be a bit terrified (well maybe just worried) about not having a backup at all times, even if not upgrading.

Backing up using Time Machine is fairly easy. See: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

I use an external USB SSD but the following covers the options: Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support
