American Inflight movies don’t work

My iPhone will not play aa inflight movies. I have been on 5 flights and no movies will work. The ads work just fine. However, after I watch the ads I get a spinning icon on my screen that never goes away. The movies do not work.

I'm sorry you think it was unhelpful. And yes the post did intimate that Apple should fix it themselves on the iOS side which would require Apple to hack AAs software. But as it turned out there were 3 parties involved, AA, Apple and the company running the software for the streaming media. And yes, I'm sure Apple was in contact with AA and AA was in contact with their vendor. But Apple can't "reach out and fix the issue on their own accord".

My understanding is that iOS 15.2 and AA's latest version fixed the problem, it worked for my sister when she flew back from Charlotte.

I just flew, and have some helpful info.

on the way to my destination, in flight entertainment wouldn’t work. Same issue everyone else is having where the ads play but then the movie never does. I was on 15.0.1 at the time.

I read several threads at my layover and updated my iOS to the current update 15.2.1. I’m on my flight home currently and the entertainment is working!

thankfully it seems they fixed this with the new iOS update. Hope that helps

I traveled in late November and movies would not play on my iPad Pro. Like other posts, the commercials would play just fine but the movies would not play. I did upgrade to iOS 15.1 per the comments in this thread and the movies are now playing on my iPad. As someone else mentioned, the movies controls (play, pop-out screen) are a little finicky but seem to work. My opinion is progress but still not perfect.

Apple cannot hack into someone else's app and fix their problem. AA has had a longstanding problem of failing to update their app when new versions of iOS come along, I believe they contract with a company to develop their app. If you are able to see the adds but not the movie that will be a Digital Rights Management block and is put in by the people that are supplying the movie. Do you have an account with AA to pay for the movie?

I've not used the service but on the other hand I know many who have but I have not spoke to them since the release of iOS 15.

BTW, this is primarily a user-to-user technical support site although there are some Community Specialists that answer posts that go unanswered by a volunteer after 12 - 24 hours. I would strong suggest you call AppleCare so you can relay the details of your issue and they can pass it along to AA.

I am having the same issue running iOS 15.0.2 on both my iPad and iPhone. I’ve just seen the post regarding updating to iOS 15.1. I’m actually in the Admirals Club lounge connecting through to my final destination, so I’m updating to 15.1 on both devices. I’ll test in a few hours and if all works, will update this thread accordingly by the end of the day.

OK so flew two flights this weekend, both with Boeing aircraft and using Viasat. Used a 2017 iPad Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, both with iOS 15.1. Was able to see movies, however with some caveats. Please note:

iPhone worked perfectly. Was able to see multiple movies with no issues.

With the iPad it was a bit tricker. When I opened in Safari, movie would play, but it seemed to be taking a lot of processing power. I could not scrub the video, difficult to maximize screen, etc. However, when I used the trackpad on my Smart Keyboard to maximize the video, then everything ran perfectly. I had to do it this way because when I pressed with my finger it would take too long for the iPad to respond. When maximized it was like I was watching a movie downloaded on my device.

Still seems to be an iOS issue since it’s not working 100%, just hope someone is able to solve this soon. Since we’re getting back in the air it would be a shame that Apple devices wouldn’t work with the US’s largest carrier…

Not sure what you're expecting from this group. I don't believe anyone here is a developer at apple or has worked on the Navsat system for AA. This thread seems to be a way to explain what is going on and see if anyone has experienced any improvement. If you want direct help from Apple, you can submit a bug report for iOS, or you can leave a negative review for the AA app and specifically comment on the Navsat functionality. Apple will not solve this since the actual developer has to submit a request and/or has to correct this issue (movies work fine on the other system which AA uses, so this shows it's not an Apple specific issue).

Please make sure your comments are constructive and helpful to the group. Report your experiences and anything you may have done to solve the issue. Don't break everyone else down just because you don't like their answer.

It is irritating that Apple is simply telling everyone having issues playing AA inflight entertainment to contact AA or Viasat. Obviously neither have any customer support worth anything so why doesn’t Apple figure out what the conflict is and let us know because i know dozens of people having this issue. Is it something in Apples new IOS that viasant doesn’t like, did Apple not agree to something, what is the fix? It’s ridiculous that travelers taking cross country and international flights can’t get anyone to help? Same issue as above for months. Everything runs through commercials then movies or shows never play. Provide more support other than contact the other guy. FYI, i sent same complaint to AA but they will never respond. Maybe you will.

My wife and I could not stream any movies on our recent trip via American Airlines to Cabo and back. As previously described in this thread, we could see the ads prior to the movies and could watch trailers, but the movie start arrow did nothing. I have an iPad with up-to-date iOS and an iPhone 13 Pro Max, my wife has the latest iPad and an iPhone 12 Pro, all with up-to-date iOS...nothing worked. Pretty frustrating!
