having trouble converting bmp files to any other image file using the size of the original bmp. Would even like a software recommendation to make the conversion. Using preview not helpful enough.

I recommend either of these: Lemke Software's Graphic Converter or Pixelmator Pro - free trial.
Both are available in the App Store. Graphic Converter is the more basic of the two. Both do much more than just convert pic formats.
Not understanding why you can't use Preview for this. Exporting a file from one format to another should be cake for that program.
